Srinagar: Opposition MLAs from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today bore the brunt of the anger surrounding the custodial death of a man in Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir. Locals attacked several MLAs who had gone to the victim's home to offer condolences to his family.
The legislators were thrashed and their vehicles were damaged in stone-pelting, forcing their security guards to open fire to disperse the crowd.
28-year-old Nazim Rashid alias Anjum, a resident of Krankshiven locality in Sopore town, had died in custody of the Special Operations Group on Sunday after he was picked up on Saturday for questioning in connection with a case.
Sources say Rashid died due to alleged torture in police custody, but cops maintain that he died of a heart attack. A medical board has been constituted to look into the matter.
