Sopore: Kashmir's terror zone

Sopore: Sopore in Kashmir has become a terror hotspot. In the last six months, more than 20 security men have lost their lives fighting militants there.

Army intelligence indicates that a large number of Lashkar operatives continue to thrive in the region.

"Sopore is an endless game in which the Army has been on and off trying to fight this menace of militancy over there," says Brigadier S K Thapa, Sector Commander Kilo Force.

On Tuesday, Captain Devinder Jass and his team came into the town on a specific intelligence tip off about the presence of top Lashkar commanders in the area.

The operation was launched at 2 in the morning. Four hours later paratrooper Imtiaz was killed and Captain Jass died minutes later.

It took more than 24 hours for the security forces to neutralize the militants.

Army sources say around 20 LeT militants are operating in Sopore, among them a top LeT commander Abdullah Yuni who has managed to escape security forces at least five times in the last six months.

Despite last week's casualties, the Army is now concentrating on specific intelligence-based operations. Sopore is likely to remain at the centre of a renewed offensive.
