Ahmedabad:
The Gujarat High Court has appointed a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to determine how Ishrat Jehan was killed.
After allegations raised over the probe conducted earlier, this time an officer from outside Gujarat has been selected to head the team.
In June 2004 , Ishrat, a college student who was 19, her boyfriend, and two others were killed by the Gujarat police on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. At that time, the police claimed that the four were planning to assassinate Chief Minister Narendra Modi. A magisterial inquiry by Justice SP Tamang said Jehan had been killed in a fake encounter by policemen who wanted to win Modi's appreciation, promotions and medals. The state government challenged that finding. The Gujarat High Court then stayed the Tamang report.
Ishrat's family had asked for a CBI inquiry into the case, but this was rejected by the Supreme Court.
"Some officers in the team have impeccable track record. Let's see how the investigations are conducted now," said Rauf Lala, Isharat's uncle
The team appointed On Friday to investigate the case consists of two members of the Gujarat Police and a representative of the Delhi Police.
"Of the four names we had suggested, one officer has been taken in. So we are hopeful that now the investigation would go in right direction," said SH Iyer, counsel for Pranesh Pillai, who is one of the four killed in the encounter.
