He shared the the two photos on Twitter and Facebook this morning, before he addressed NCC cadets from all over the country in Delhi for the Republic Day annual camp, and tweeted, "Will address NCC rally today. Mind is full of memories of my association with NCC. NCC taught me a lot."

Among the many comments, likes, shares and retweets, were observations such as - "Sat on the floor then, Sitting on the top now."

In the evening, PM Modi posted his speech at the rally.

Speaking to the young cadets, the Prime Minister - who two days ago drew rapturous applause and cheers as he arrived for the Republic Day parade -  reminisced about how he was overlooked in selections for the parade as an NCC cadet.

"This reminds me of my old days...but I was never selected to come to Delhi for 26th January," he rued in his address. A cadet from his school who had come to Delhi for the parade had turned into an instant celebrity back home, the PM said.

He talked of other former NCC cadets, some now members of his cabinet. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar was one he said, and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. Mr Parrikar's deputy, junior minister Rao Inderjit Singh was an NCC cadet too.

So was the BJP's candidate for chief minister in Delhi, Kiran Bedi, the Prime Minister shared. Also, actor turned politician Jaya Bachchan.

His NCC days, the PM said, prepped him for public life instilling values such as patriotism. He described the NCC as a "mini-India" and an example of the unity in diversity that is the country's strength.

PM Modi has asked NCC cadets across the country to hold a synchronized Yoga camp on 21st June, recently declared international yoga day. "Let it be the biggest display of Yoga and break all records," the PM exhorted.
