Mohammad Kaif, wanted shooter in a journalist murder case, is seen with Bihar politician Shahabuddin.

Patna: When Bihar don-turned-politician Mohammad Shahabuddin delivered his controversial assessment of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar after stepping out of prison, Mohammad Kaif, an alleged sharpshooter was spotted by his side.

Photographs and video footage from that day are now being circulated.

Mohammad Kaif is wanted by the police in the murder of a senior journalist Rajdeo Ranjan in May this year, and has been on the run ever since.

On Saturday, however, he not just greeted Mr Shahabuddin outside the Bhagalpur jail, but also rode in the convoy of 300-odd cars that accompanied the former lawmaker from Lalu Yadav's RJD, to his home in Siwan.

"What more proof do you need on how close Shahabuddin is to the killers of Rajdeo Ranjan?" asked the BJP's Sushil Modi, Leader of Opposition in the Bihar assembly, today.

Soon after Mr Ranjan's murder, four people were arrested including Upendra Singh, a man known to have links with Mr Shahabuddin.

The BJP has alleged for months that the installation of a Nitish Kumar- Lalu Yadav coalition government in Bihar last year has resurrected Mr Shahabuddin, who was in jail for 11 years.

The opposition party has met the state's governor to protest against the grant of bail to Mr Shahabuddin, alleging the return of what it calls "jungle raj" to Bihar. It links the relief for the former lawmaker with the influence of his party chief Lalu Yadav in the state government.

The BJP was Nitish Kumar's partner when Mohammad Shahabuddin went to jail in 2005. Mr Kumar was credited with ending his reign of terror in Siwan and his government opposed bail in every case against Mr Shahabuddin, who faces nearly 40 criminal cases.

Mr Kumar and the BJP parted ways a few years ago and he joined hands with once bitter rival Lalu Yadav for the assembly elections last year. They scored a handsome win and have since made multiple assertions that their partnership is strong.

But Mr Shahabuddin has made clear that he bears a grudge against Nitish Kumar and gave voice to the displeasure of many in the RJD when he said he was a "circumstantial chief minister," handed the leadership in a coalition agreement.
