Srinagar:
As gunshots faded after a 22-hour terror siege in Srinagar on Thursday, politics took over, with People's Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti making a provocative charge aimed at the ruling National Conference. She alleged the attack was an attempt to sabotage the efforts to withdraw troops from the state.
"There are some vested interests who are trying to sabotage troop withdrawal in J&K. Serious thought should be given to whether it's militants who don't want the troops to be withdrawn from the state or it's some government agency who also have a hand in sabotaging any move for troops withdrawal," she said, a few hours after security forces had managed to kill the two terrorists who had holed up in a Srinagar hotel.
Wednesday's terrorist attack came a day after the National Conference-led coalition government completed its first year in office and listed in its achievements, an improved security situation. It was the first attack of such intensity in months and came soon after the recent troops cut in the Valley.
The last suicide attack had take place in the Dal Lake area of Srinagar in October 2007.
