Srinagar: Normal life affected due to strike called by Geelani

Srinagar: Normal life was on Saturday partially affected in the Kashmir Valley due to a strike called by hardline Hurriyat Conference led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, demanding release of all political prisoners in the state.

While the commercial hub of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas remained closed, the strike evoked little response in Civil Lines and sub urban areas of the city, officials said.

The government offices functioned normally and the attendance of the employees was good, they said.

Transport services were affected in some parts of the city but vehicles plied normally in inter-district routes, the officials said.

They said, however, many private schools remained closed as a precautionary measure in view of the several attacks on school buses by miscreants during the last year's summer unrest.

Geelani had called for a general strike today to press for release of political prisoners and those youth arrested on charges of stone-pelting during last year's unrest.
