Srinagar tense again, curfew imposed

Srinagar tense again, curfew imposed
Srinagar: In Anantnag, the air is filled with the mixture of grief and anger that has become ubiquitous in this part of the country.

The funeral procession of 12-year-old Irshad Ahmed, a Class 6 student, made its way through the streets. Irshad died in clashes during security forces and protesters on Monday evening. Curfew was imposed soon after.

The same weary silence fills Srinagar, where five young men were injured when a policeman fired at them on Monday in the city's Maisuma area. Those who live nearby say the boys, in their late teens and early 20s, were playing carom when an argument began with the policeman on duty here.

Among those injured are two relatives of separatist leader Yasin Malik. One of them, Yasin's cousin, Yasir Rafiq, is said to be in critical condition. Rumours that he had died in hospital flared a new round of protests, and the government imposed curfew on Tuesday morning.

The policeman responsible for the firing has since been suspended and arrested. An inquiry has also been ordered.

The crisis in the Valley echoed in Parliament. "How many more children have to be killed? For how long the governments in New Delhi and Kashmir are going to do this?" asked the Left's Brinda Karat.

Sixty-five civilians, including women and children, have lost their lives in the last three months of strife in the Valley.

As the unrest continues, hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani issued an ultimatum asking New Delhi to accept Kashmir as a dispute or face increased protests.
