Srinagar:
Srinagar's National Institute of Technology, or NIT, was shut on Friday morning after students clashed over India's loss in the World T20 semi-finals match against West Indies.
A local student said non-Kashmiri students were irked by the celebrations when India lost to West Indies and a fight had started.
This morning, the students gathered to protest about the ruckus. Sources said the university authorities called in the police and shut down the campus to control the situation.
Hundreds of students assembled in the compound and started stone pelting at the police who retaliated with baton charge and tear gas shelling. There were allegations that the police had used tear gas on the students.
"The situation is returning to normal and the campus will be reopened very soon," Registrar Dr Fayaz Ahmad Mir told NDTV. "The order on closing campus is being reviewed."
The NIT authorities also asked the students to vacate the hostels.
The order, Mr Mir said, was issued to "build pressure on students to restore peace and is being reviewed".
The NIT, earlier known as Regional Engineering College, has nearly 2,500 students and 400 academic staff members. A majority of the students, however, come from outside the state.
