Surat: A 68-year-old woman died and ten others injured in a stampede during a convocation ceremony of the Arabic University at Zampa bazar area, on Monday, the police said.
The stampede took place when a huge crowd gathered to get a glimpse of religious leader Sayeedna Mohamad Burhannydin who was the chief guest at the function. The venue lacked capacity to accommodate the crowd, they said.
Rabba Shiakani from Jamnagar succumbed to her injuries, that she sustained during the stampede, at Bhurhani Hospital where she was rushed for treatment. Adding to incident, the police said, the injured have also been admitted to the same hospital.
Her body has been sent to civil hospital for postmortem, they added.
