Hyderabad:
The road to statehood for Telangana may not be smooth. The TRS has made it clear that Telangana must have Hyderabad, a demand that's likely to meet with stiff resistance.
The TRS has also said that it won't be satisfied with just a resolution on Telangana in the Andhra Assembly. They say a resolution does not mean statehood and want the Centre to bring a Bill in Parliament.
Reacting to Union Home Minister P Chidambaram's statement that an appropriate resolution would be moved in the state assembly for creation of Telangana, K T Rama Rao, son of TRS chief K Chandrasekhara Rao said, "A resolution in the state assembly would not be sufficient to create a state," adding, "The real effort is to bring a Bill in Parliament."
(Watch: No Telangana without Hyderabad: TRS)He also said TRS would not accept Telangana without the inclusion of Hyderabad in it. "Hyderabad has been the capital of the region for the last 400 years and they would not accept a separate state without the city," he said.
The TRS wants the government to spell out a timetable for the creation of Telangana.
Now the critical question is does Hyderabad want to be with Telangana?
Telangana impact on CongressBut it's not just the demands of the TRS that the Congress has to contend with. It has to also find a way out of the sharp divide within its own ranks in Andhra Pradesh.
Out of the 157 Congress MLAs, 51 are from Telangana. This means that 106 MLAs from the non-Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh are against bifurcation.
But the 14 MLAs from Hyderabad are not willing to let Hyderabad go to Telangana. So out of 157 Congress MLAs, only 37 are totally in favour of Telangana.
