New Delhi: The JD(U), which has come out in support of the demonetisation move by the Modi government, On Sunday said the opposition in Parliament could have played more "coordinated and calibrated" role in taking on the government.

JD(U)'s Rajya Sabha MP Pavan Varma said his party has got the feedback that despite the hardships faced by people, they were supporting the move.

"Opposition could have, even on the question of implementation, played a more coordinated and a calibrated role. We support the intent behind demonetisation. We critic its implementation.

"The opposition needs to do far more work to present a coordinated and effective approach of making the government accountable and there is a great scope for improvement," Mr Varma said.

He was speaking at the Delhi Literature Festival on a session on Debating Modi Sarkar: The Role of the Opposition.

The JDU leader said that his party was willing to wait to see whether the goals that the exercise was seeking to achieve will be achieved or not.

"We also have the feedback that the common man is willing to give, at this moment, the benefit of doubt to the government. But no government can assume that patience or stoicism of people in perpetuity," he said.

Criticising the current logjam in the Parliament, he said democracy in Parliament has been reduced to such "juvenile levels".

Slamming Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Varma said he should have come suo-motto to the House and participated in the debate, considering the magnitude of the issue.

"He (the Prime Minister) cannot absent himself from the debate," Mr Varma said.
