A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.1 was reported near the India-Myanmar border on Friday morning, according to the National Center for Seismology.
Tremors were felt across Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Assam. Witness accounts on European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre's (EMSC) website said that the quake was felt as far away as Kolkata.
"It was one of the longest earthquake I've ever felt," one such witness from Mizoram's Thenzawl posted on EMSC.
There has been no report of loss of life or damage to property so far.
The epicentre of the earthquake was 183 kilometres east of Chittagong in Bangladesh. According to the Seismology Center, the quake occured at 5.15am, at a depth of 35km.
There were also reports of a second earthquake at 5.53am.
The northeastern region sits on a high seismic zone, making earthquakes frequent in the area.
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake had shaken Assam and parts of the region on April 28.
