New Delhi: With the death of a student due to suspected swine flu, all classes at the Women's College under Aligarh Muslim University have been suspended till February 18, the university spokesperson said today.
The student, along with 185 other girls, had gone for an educational tour to South India last week, he said.
On her return, she developed some symptoms akin to those of the disease and was treated at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital, AMU, he said.
As her condition deteriorated, she was referred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS in Delhi but died before she could reach the city last evening, the spokesperson said.
The University has also issued a notification that as a precautionary measure, all educational tours and field trips have been cancelled till further date, the spokesperson said.
"There is no need for any panic. All the residents of Women's College hostels are being properly screened and provided necessary medical checkup. There is no evidence of any threat of outbreak of this disease", he added.
Principal of the JN Medical College, Tariq Mansoor, said that a special isolation ward has been established at the Medical College Hospital and as a precautionary step, 37 doctors who have been treating swine flu patients are being administered preventive medicines.
Other precautionary measures including masks for all medical staff attending suspected cases are also been taken, he said.
