Chandigarh: Six months after a mob attacked Haryana finance minister Captain Abhimanyu's house in Rohtak the state government has written to the centre asking for a CBI probe into the incident.

On February 19, at the height of the Jat agitation in Haryana, a mob broke into the minister's house, set it ablaze and allegedly tried to kill nine members of his family. 29 people have been arrested in connection with the attack so far by the Haryana police's special investigation team.

The Haryana government approached the centre requesting a CBI probe into the incident after Captain Abhimanyu alleged that the attack was a political conspiracy against him and his family.

The minister who was in Chandigarh when the attack happened, had later said, "It was a political conspiracy to wipe out my entire family. A conspiracy by disgruntled elements and political opponents who could not make it to power corridors through democratic ways."

Captain Abhimanyu has welcomed the probe by the CBI saying "everyone wanted to know the truth."

Rohtak was the epicentre of the Jat agitation for OBC status and quota benefits in government jobs and admission into educational institutions.  Over 30 people were killed and property worth hundreds of crores of rupees was destroyed in the agitation.

Several government and private buildings were damaged by protesters, including Captain Abhimanyu's palatial house, which had evoked widespread criticism and anger. The CBI probe will look into all aspects of the attack.

"The probe will look into both criminal and political angle of the incidents of arson and vandalism of public properties including the Rohtak circuit house, and government buildings apart from just the minister's house," a government spokesperson said.
