Sitting Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) members Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and Naresh Gujral today filed their nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha membership from Punjab.
Mr Dhindsa and Mr Gujral (the son of former prime minister IK Gujral), both senior leaders of SAD, filed their nomination papers in Chandigarh, a state Assembly spokesman said.
The term of five members of Rajya Sabha elected from Punjab will expire in April.
The polling for electing five new Rajya sabha members will be held on March 21.
The lawmakers whose term is expiring are Ashwani Kumar (Congress), Avinash Rai Khanna (BJP), Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa (Akali Dal), Manohar Singh (Congress) and Naresh Gujral (Akali Dal).
The last date of filing nominations is March 11. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on March 12 and last date for withdrawal of candidature is March 14.
Former Punjab Congress chief Partap Singh Bajwa, former CLP leader Sunil Kumar Jakhar, senior party leaders SS Dullo and Laal Singh are among the front-runners as Congress candidates. BJP is likely to field cricketer-turned-politician and former lawmaker Navjot Singh Sidhu for Rajya Sabha.
