Supreme Court adjourns plea hearing on N-plant safety
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned the plea hearing on safety of the nuclear plants in the country. The plea is seeking reassessment of all nuclear facilities and a comprehensive long-term cost-benefit analysis of the plants.

The Supreme Court said that that "while this is a very serious matter and we appreciate the petitioners concern, yet we cannot hurry with this."

The Court also asked Counsel Prashant Bhushan to submit details of safety procedures in countries like USA in the next four weeks.

It also said that the nuclear bill is in Parliament. Hence, Supreme Court cannot take matters into its own hands.

The Chief Justice, during the last hearing, indicated that it would not go into the safety aspects of all nuclear plants in the country and all such concerns could be addressed to respective High Courts.

Mr Bhushan had sought that the court's direction to the central government to put on hold the nuclear plants being set up in the wake of the India-US nuclear deal till their safety and cost benefit analysis is carried out.

Chief Justice Kapadia, however, made it clear that if the petitioners have anything to say about an individual nuclear power plant, they can approach the High Court of the state where the project is being set up.
