Supreme Court ban on narco test a setback: CBI

New Delhi: Days after the Calcutta High Court ordered registration of murder case in the mysterious death of Rizwanur Rehman and directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to start investigation a fresh, the investigating agency's Director Ashwini Kumar said the CBI is taking legal opinion in the case.

"We are taking legal opinion before we take the next step," he said in an interview to NDTV.

Speaking on the Mecca and Ajmer blasts, he said, "These blast cases are related but we cannot conduct narco-analysis test on the suspect because of the Supreme Court order."

"Narco test used to be a tool in investigation and a ban on it is definitely a setback," he added.

He also rubbished the allegations that the apex investigating agency is influenced politically. "We don't get carried away by political pressure," he said.

When asked about the dismissal of CBI plea challenging the dropping of charges against BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Vinay Katiyar and Uma Bharti in Babri Masjid demolition case, Kumar said, "We will take legal opinion in Babri case before any decisions."

A Lucknow court had earlier cancelled the plea on Thursday.

These leaders now cannot be charged with the actual conspiracy to demolish the mosque. However, the case against them for making provocative speeches and inciting kar sevaks is still pending.
