Supreme Court cancels tax evader Hasan Ali's bail

Supreme Court cancels tax evader Hasan Ali's bail
New Delhi: Hasan Ali, the controversial businessman from Pune, will stay to jail.  The Supreme Court has cancelled Mr Ali's bail.

The entrepreneur was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in March on charges of money laundering. He has been accused of stashing upto 8 billion dollars in foreign bank accounts, and has been asked to pay taxes of 70,000 crores.

The Bombay High court had granted bail to Mr Ali in August.  However, because the Supreme Court stayed this bail the same month, Mr Ali has been in Arthur Road jail for the last few months.

The government, however, had said that given the fact that Mr Ali is being investigated for owning fake passports, and because of his alleged vast wealth in other countries, he should not be free.  The Centre also said that Mr Ali is suspected to have a role in the theft of the Nizam's jewels from the Hyderabad museum.

Mr Ali's lawyers argued that he has not tried to tamper with evidence, and that he has not abused his personal liberties while on bail.
