The Supreme Court on Friday issued a notice to the Centre questioning the University Grants Commission's (UGC) power to recommend Deemed University status to an educational institution.
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that wants the provision in the UGC Act scrapped, a three-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice of India also issued a notice to the UGC.
The petitioner says this has led to commercialisation of education.
