New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ruled that for now sociologist Ashis Nandy cannot be arrested for remarks made by him at the Jaipur literary festival last week.

Mr Nandy, one of India's best-known academicians, faces multiple cases in different states for his comments that corruption is prevalent among Dalits, backward and oppressed classes.

He later clarified that what he meant was that corruption among Dalits is noticeable while that of the rich is not.

A non-bailable warrant had been issued against him by the Rajasthan Police under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes Act.

Though the Supreme Court has stayed his arrest today, the investigations against Mr Nandy will continue.
