New Delhi:
The Supreme Court today expressed its displeasure over very little progress achieved in cleaning the Yamuna River despite spending over 4000 crores and questioned the Centre, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana governments.
The court said, "All the agencies have spent crores of rupees. What is the purpose? What work has been done ultimately?" The court initiated suo motu proceedings in the case based on a newspaper report nearly two decades ago.
The Central government, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana spent huge amount of money to set up 18 sewage plants to treat to effluents and discharge treated water into the river. The court, however, said that it was found the treated water still had high pollution rate.
It directed the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) to submit whether the existing sewage treatment plants are working and how untreated waste can be stopped to be directly drained to the river.
It also asked the Centre to inform what steps Yamuna Development Authority has taken so far to cleanse the Yamuna.
The court asked a two-member panel from CPCB and Jal board to submit a report on the above issues within two weeks. It will now hear the matter on November 9.
