Supreme Court Recalls Orders, To Hear Maran Brothers' Plea Against 2G Scam Case Summons

The Supreme Court today recalled its own order and said it will hear the petition of Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi against summons in the 2G spectrum scam case on Monday.

Earlier today, the court had refused to hear the Maran brothers' plea and said they could approach the Delhi high court against a trial court order summoning them as accused.

But the CBI, which is investigating the case, was not present at the time and later said the case cannot be heard by any high court as an earlier ruling had said all 2G scam cases have to be heard by the Supreme Court.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice will now take up the case.
In October last year, a special 2G court had summoned the Marans and six others as accused in the Aircel-Maxis case.

Mr Maran is a top leader of the Tamil Nadu party, the DMK, which was, for some years, a member of the national coalition government headed by Dr Manmohan Singh. He was Telecom Minister from 2004 to 2007. Mr Maran lost the parliamentary election in May this year.

The CBI has alleged that Mr Maran misused his office in 2006 to pressure the owner of Aircel, C Sivasankaran, to sell his company to Maxis, based in Malaysia. In exchange, say investigators, Maxis invested Rs. 650 crore in a company owned by Mr Maran's brother Kalanithi Maran
