BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had alleged that Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi has claimed himself to be a British national before authorities.
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court today refused urgent hearing on a plea seeking a direction to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to register a case against Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for allegedly declaring himself as a British national before company law authorities there.
"There is no urgency in the matter," a bench headed by Chief Justice HL Dattu said when lawyer ML Sharma pleaded for urgent listing and hearing on his Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
Recently, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has alleged that the Congress leader has claimed himself to be a British national before the authorities in connection with incorporation of a firm.
The documents released by Mr Swamy show that Mr Gandhi had called himself "British" on the annual returns of a UK-based firm "Backops Limited". Rejecting the allegations, the Congress had released a certificate of incorporation of the company that mentioned his nationality as Indian.
The discrepancy between the document and the British government's records was on account of a typographical error, the Congress said.
Mr Gandhi has rejected allegations of impropriety and has dared Prime Minister Narendra Modi to order an inquiry against him and jail him if he is proven guilty. He accused PM Modi of using his 'chamchas' (cronies) to throw mud at him like the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and BJP did against his parents and grandmother Indira Gandhi.
