Supreme Court Rejects Jat Students' Plea for Admission Under Scrapped Quota

On March 17, the Supreme Court scrapped the quota for Jats in jobs and universities, calling it illegal.

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court today rejected a petition by a group of Jat students who asked for reservations in a medical college based on a recently scrapped quota under the central Other Backward Classes (OBC) list.

On March 17, the Supreme Court scrapped the quota for Jats in jobs and universities, calling it illegal. The top court said the inclusion of a politically-organised class like the Jats would adversely impact the welfare of the other backward classes. The court also questioned why the government ignored the findings of a panel advising against quota for Jats.

The Jat students argued that when they applied for medical courses, the quota was legal. When the quota was scrapped, the students said, they were at the counseling stage. They told the court that they should be granted admission under the backward quota.

Today, the court said that when it was hearing a clutch of petitions that challenged the previous UPA government's decision to include Jats in the central OBC list, it had made clear that all university admissions would be subject its decision.
