Panchkula: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on thursday said since India is a democratic country the Supreme Court's verdict on the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal issue "will have to be accepted by all".

"The present government had vigorously pursued the SYL case and got the hearing fast-tracked in the Supreme Court on presidential reference. It had been lying pending for the last 10 to 12 years," he said in a conference organised for current and former MLAs and MPs here as part of Haryana's Swarna Jayanti celebrations.

Any other inter-state issue could be resolved through mutual dialogue. But the interests of Haryana would remain supreme, the Chief Minister said.

On November 1, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had said Punjab will not accept any verdict against the state's interest on river waters.

"We are ready to make any sacrifice to safeguard the legitimate share of river waters," Mr Badal had said.
