New Delhi: Union Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted today that she is in hospital because of kidney failure and is going through tests for a transplant. The revelation was followed by a flood of wishes and even offers of kidneys.
The 64-year-old External Affairs Minister was admitted to the AIIMS hospital in Delhi last Tuesday.
Her tweet this morning confirmed why. She is on dialysis. Describing her as one of the best speakers in parliament, Congress leader Ambika Sonia said: "She is an iconic leader for women. We wish her speedy recovery and hope she comes back soon and does what she does best...make the house listen with pin drop silence."
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah were among the first to respond to her tweet and wish her well. Ms Swaraj, who is popular on social media because of her high degree of engagement and quick response to SOS, spent 21 days in hospital earlier this year for chest congestion and fever.
The minister has been diabetic for years.
Last Tuesday, a doctor at AIIMS was quoted as saying that the minister "has diabetes and other medical problems" and she will go through "certain endocrinological tests."
Within an hour, Ms Swaraj's tweet had drawn nearly 3,000 retweets and 4,300 likes.
