New Delhi: The Congress today termed External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's statement that India would not oppose application of Pakistan for entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) as "surprising".

"This is a very surprising statement. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj yesterday (Sunday) said that India will not oppose Pakistan's entry into Nuclear Suppliers Group," said senior party leader Jairam Ramesh, noting that Pakistan "is known across the world for nuclear black-marketing".

To a question on Pakistan also trying to get NSG membership, Ms Swaraj said: "Look, India is not a member in the group. But we will not oppose entry of any other country. What we want is all the applications are decided on their own merits."
