New Delhi:
Rahul Gandhi has never held a non-Indian passport and never been on non-Indian citizenship, Congress said today virtually challenging the government to disprove it in the wake of BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy's charges against its vice president.
"Swamy's attempts must be dismissed with the contempt they deserve because they are nothing but a bunch of falsehood," party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said at the AICC briefing.
"The entire information is in public domain. There has been a written official response from the Congress four days back. Where is the question of annual returns when I have made a categorical statement? Let the government disprove it," he said.
He was asked about the allegation that Rahul's UK-based company - now dissolved - in its annual return for 2005 and 2006 and in its dissolution application in 2009, told British Company Law authorities that the Congress leader's nationality is British.
Mr Singhvi alleged that the "dirty tricks department" of the BJP has employed Mr Swamy to divert and digress from the various omissions of the NDA government from the policy-paralysis.
"It is no point trying to throw these innuendos -- you have the government of day, you have the entire machinery and you should be able to put a single proof and not these straws in the winds by a person like Dr Swamy.
"If you are the government, you should have produced some material rather than relying on Dr Swamy's allegations which are false. There is no question of any account at Zurich; there is no question of detention - these are laughable things and we condemn them with the contempt they deserve," he added.
