Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg said intelligence agencies were questioning him.
Panaji:
A Syrian national was detained by the police in Goa late on Monday night allegedly for "overstaying" in India after his visa expired.
Speaking to NDTV, Sunil Garg Inspector General of Police confirmed the development and said intelligence agencies were questioning him.
"He was picked up from a casino last night. He was in India even after his visa had expired. As of now it seems to be a case of overstaying," Mr Garg said.
Asked if it could be possibly connected to any terror plot, Mr Garg said it was a little early to say that.
Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar too confirmed the detention and said investigations were on to probe if he had any terror links.
Intel inputs have indicated that Goa could be one of the places, terror groups like the Islamic State could target. Over 15 people were arrested last week across the country over alleged links to ISIS.
