Tackling encephalitis: Govt holds crisis meet

Lucknow: As number of deaths from Japanese Encephalitis rise in Basti and Gorakhpur districts of Uttar Pradesh, the Health Department held a high level meeting where officials decided on an immediate immunisation programme.

The state government has been given three months to carry out a 100 per cent immunisation against the disease. 58 lakh people who were hit by the deadly fever will also be rehabilitated.

"Immunisation was not complete. So we have asked them to complete the immunisation. And at the same time, we have asked them to make a monitoring committee so that they can monitor Basti and Gorakhpur every month to see where this is occurring," said Dr Jagdish Prasad, Special ADG, Health Services.

The Health Department is also writing to the Bihar government where cases of encephalitis are on the rise.
