The indefinite bandh called by the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) on Saturday to press for a CBI inquiry into the killing of ALGL president Madang Tamang, disrupted normal life in the three hill subdivisions of Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong.
Besides a CBI inquiry, the GJM is demanding transfer of IG (North) K L Tamta and sub-divisional police officer of Kurseong. It also wants that no extension be given to Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council care-taker secretary B L Meena, who completes his tenure this month. Tamta was transferred by the West Bengal government on Saturday.
The CID had arrested four GJM activists in connection with Tamang's murder on June 17.
Official sources said the bandh was total and peaceful with all shops and business establishments as well as educational offices closed.
Vehicles kept off the roads and attendance in government offices was thin, the sources said.
GJM assistant general secretary Benoy Tamang said that the bandh was total and included the cinchona plantations in Kalimpong.
As per a Supreme Court order, national Highway 31A, the road link between Siliguri and landlocked Sikkim was kept outside the purview of the bandh.
No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the hills till afternoon.
