Tamil Nadu cop's death: Three held; no politician charged

Tirunelvelli, Tamil Nadu: Two days after Sub Inspector Vetrivel bled to death, three people have been arrested for his murder. (Read: Sub Inspector under scanner for TN cop murder)

Police say he was a victim of mistaken identity. The real target was another Sub-Inspector whose wife had allegedly plotted his murder. The assailants were told to attack a person in police uniform, riding a motor bike and wearing a helmet. He was supposed to pass through the same stretch.

But before that, Vetrivel came along and the assailants attacked him.

The real target's wife and family members have attempted to kill him earlier too and a case is pending in the court. She is absconding; her brother masterminded this.

But there has been no action so far against the two ministers who just watched on as Vetrivel lay bleeding, begging for help. (Read & Watch: Policeman attacked on road, ministers stare from cars, don't help)

Public outrage is growing over this indifferent behaviour.

A case of abetment to murder has to be filed against them and arrested. They may not have been a part of the conspiracy, but they have allowed the victim to die.

"If the gangsters have attacked the Sub Inspector, the ministers have killed him by not helping," said Dr P Rajani, professor and a theater personality.

But the ministers are still unrepentant; one of them - Sports Minister Mohidheen Khan - said he doesn't need to quit.

"No, there's no question of resigning. There's no need for it now," Khan said.

The ministers' callousness has become a national shame, but Tamil Nadu government has not even ordered a probe, and the ruling DMK leadership is maintaining a stoic silence.
