Tamil Nadu launches search for missing CPM leader

New Delhi: A veteran CPM leader, W R Varadarajan, went missing in Tamil Nadu. A popular trade union leader, Vardarajan was removed from the party's highest executive - the central committee. The action was recommended by the Tamil Nadu unit of the CPM.

Sources told NDTV that the state unit, after conducting an inquiry, charged on Vardarajan of "inappropriate behaviour which is unbecoming of a communist leader". His wife, too, had reportedly complained of misconduct.

In fact, a local magazine published a letter by Vardarajan in which he wrote: "I have overcome many internal party struggles. But in my personal life I've fallen."

The CPM's highest executive body that met in Kolkata on February 6 discussed the issue and approved to remove the Communist leader from all party posts. Interestingly, the party has not announced it yet officially.

"In our party action is taken irrespective of one's seniority. The party's central committee took this decision. It was something related to his misconduct, but this is our internal matter," said CPM Central Committee member Hannan Mulla.

The Tamil Nadu Police have launched a statewide hunt for Varadarajan.

"We've checked all unclaimed bodies, but there are no clues yet. We've now asked our ADGP to alert police in all districts," said Chennai Police Commissioner T Rajendran.

Varadarajan has been with the CPM for over three decades and there is absolute silence in their Chennai office. Cadres are hoping against hope to see him soon.
