Virudhunagar:
One person was today killed and several injured in a clash between two scheduled caste groups at Pudupatti in Virudhunagar district, leading to police firing in the air to disperse the mob, police said.
The clash between the 'Pallar' community and 'Parayar' community people ensued after a heated exchange between the groups while they were travelling in a mini-bus. Following the altercation, Karuppiah, a 32-year-old man of Pallar community, was hacked to death by the other group, they said.
As the news about the murder spread, people of Pallar community attacked the rival community in Pudupatti village in which several suffered minor injuries, they said.
After lathi-charge failed to disperse the groups, police fired seven rounds in the air to quell the mob. Armed police reinforcements had been sent and the
situation was under control, they added.
The two communities were at loggerheads since 2008 over a eve-teasing incident and a woman belonging to the Parayar community was then murdered.
