Guwahati: BJP Assam unit chief Sarbananda Sonowal today took a dig at Congress leader and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi saying he has denigrated the post to that of a party spokesperson.

"Gogoi's eagerness to be on TV and in newspapers looks more like a party spokesperson's agenda than a Chief Minister's," Mr Sonowal said.

A BJP release quoted Mr Sonowal, who is the BJP's CM candidate for the upcoming election in the state, as saying Mr Gogoi's interaction with media is "bereft" of any vision for Assam and "lacks" in any accountability for his government's "misdeeds" over the past three terms.

"A leader as old as Gogoi should have been an icon and inspiration for everybody in Assam. At his age, Gogoi should have risen from the ranks of a state Chief Minister to a national leader with a vision," he said.

"However, by constantly indulging in a negative campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Chief Minister has reduced himself to a bickering TV panelist," Mr Sonowal said

In a sharp response to Mr Gogoi's communication strategy of commentating on national issues "bypassing" the records of his "misrule" in the state, he said, "In the run up to the Assembly elections, people are awaiting a detailed report card on what the Gogoi government has done in the past 15 years in the state for its communities and tribes."
