Kolkata:
A body of a teenaged girl, who was allegedly gangraped and murdered, was found hanging from a tree in West Bengal's Muriganga in South 24 Parganas district on Tuesday, police said. Three people have been arrested in connection with the alleged crime.
The girl, a class 10 student, had reportedly gone to her school and did not return till late evening after which her mother and relatives started searching for her but could not find her. In the morning hours, one of the locals spotted the girl's body hanging from the tree and informed the family members.
Locals allege that the suspects have political links but police sources say they do not have any such evidence. Police say they are carrying out the investigation and may arrest a few more people.
The girl's mother, who works as a domestic help, told reporters: "She went to school. I don't know anything. My brother called me to inform me that my daughter did not return from school. This was around 7... In the morning my brother told me that my daughter is no more."
Another relative, who use to stay with the girl in her mother's absence said, "When I went home I saw she was not there. A person who was passing by the area told me that her body was hanging from a tree."
