Tehelka case: Cops likely to take Tarun Tejpal to hotel where alleged rape took place

Tarun Tejpal is escorted after being produced at the Sessions Court in a sexual assault case in Panaji on Sunday

Panaji: Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal, who is in the custody of Goa Police for the next six days, is expected to be taken to the hotel where he is accused of having raped a junior colleague, to help reconstruct a sequence of events.

Mr Tejpal has been charged with raping the young woman at the Grand Hyatt hotel near Panaji during an event organised by his news magazine, Tehelka, earlier this month. Yesterday, a Goa court remanded Mr Tejpal to six days in police custody for interrogation.

Earlier in the day, he was taken to hospital for a sexual potency test, mandatory in cases of sexual assault. (Read)

Police inspector Sunita Sawant is leading investigations in the case.

"He will be confronted about the conflict between his e-mails and media statements where he admits to a sexual liaison in the elevator November 7 and 8 and his subsequent rejection of the same," a police officer said.

Mr Tejpal's arrest late on Saturday and his remand on Sunday followed two weeks of drama after the woman colleague accused the veteran journalist of sexually molesting her in a Goa resort twice.

After arriving from Delhi, Mr Tejpal spent Friday night in a suite with his immediate family at the Vivanta by Taj hotel in Panaji. He spent Saturday night in a police lock-up.

In court on Sunday, he looked drained in his slightly crumpled black suit.

Mr Tejpal has said he is innocent and that the encounter with the young woman reporter was consensual.

The journalist did not press charges, but detailed her allegations against Mr Tejpal to her boss at Tehelka, Shoma Chaudhury, in an email that was leaked. She resigned last week. The Goa Police used that email to commence its investigation against Mr Tejpal.
