Panaji, Goa: Shoma Chaudhary, who quit as Managing Editor of Tehelka last week, has been summoned by the Goa police to record her statement in a court there about the case of rape that has engulfed the news magazine.
A date has not been fixed yet for her deposition.
Ms Chaudhury has been pummeled by criticism over her handling of a complaint of sexual assault made by a young reporter against Tehelka founder Tarun Tejpal, who is now in jail in Goa.
The gentlest of Ms Chaudhury's critics have accused her of staggering inaction. Legal experts have said she broke the law by not sharing the complaint with the police. The young reporter, who has also quit Tehelka, has said Ms Chaudhury betrayed her by attempting a cover-up.
In an email to Ms Chaudhury, the reporter said that Mr Tejpal had sexually assaulted her twice at an annual Tehelka conference in Goa in November.
Ms Chaudhury, in an email to Tehelka staff, said that after "an untoward incident", Mr Tejpal was "recusing himself" as the editor-in-chief of the publication for six months.
In the public outrage and discourse over sexual harassment and violence, Ms Chaudhury and Mr Tejpal were excoriated for trying to internally resolve what amounts, under news laws, to a case of rape.
Ms Chaudhury was interrogated earlier this month in Delhi by a team of the Goa police. She resigned from Tehelka on Thursday, stating, "I do not want questions raised about my integrity to tarnish the image of Tehelka."
