K Chandrashekar Rao and his Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) swept the polls in the state trumping the TDP- Congress alliance in the youngest state of the country, today. TRS won 88 seats in the 119-member assembly giving Chief MInister K Chandrasekhar Rao a landslide majority. The TDP-Congress alliance got 21 seats in total (Congress 19, TDP 2). A poll of exit polls for the 119-member assembly with a majority mark at 60, had predicted a second term for TRS with a healthy majority of 63 seats. The Results went on to prove that KCR's call for early dissolution of the Telangana assembly paid off. Asaduddin Owaisi's party -- AIMIM won 7 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party won just one seat in the state.
Speaking on the Telangana election results, TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao dedicated the emphatic victory of his party to the people of the state and said the election results would enable it to play a crucial role in national politics. "We dedicate this victory to the people of Telangana. This is a positive vote for us," KCR was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying. During campaigning, KCR had said that his party would win with "bumper majority". The exit polls also predicted that the TDP-Congress alliance, which claimed to have a "good chemisty", would fall far behind the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. Leads through the day echoed the poll of polls prediction, giving TRS a clear majority with over 80 seats. KCR's daughter K Kavitha, a parliamentarian, said his hard work had paid off. "We are seeing the response of the people. The hard work in four and a half years has paid off," said Ms Kavitha. "Nobody knows Telangana like KCR," she remarked.
The Congress, which for the first time tied up with long-time rival Chandrababu Naidu, will get only 39 of the state's 119 seats, way below the majority mark of 60, the poll of exit polls had predicted. The assembly election in Telangana was to be held in the middle of 2019, but KCR, as the chief minister is popularly known, dissolved the state assembly prematurely, pushing forward the election to the end of the year.
