Telangana today became the ninth state to ratify the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Constitutional Amendment Bill.
While the Legislative Council passed the Bill unanimously, the Legislative Assembly debated on the Bill. Even though opposition parties sought clarifications on the Bill, they eventually supported its passage.
The GST Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha earlier in this month.
The Bill needs to be ratified by at least 16 states before it is sent to the GST Council which will decide on the new tax rate. The council will also decide the central and state taxes that will be subsumed in the new tax regime.
The Council will be constituted after the Constitution amendment bill is notified.
