Telangana examiner for Telangana students?

Hyderabad: In a deeply polarised Andhra Pradesh, here's another demand that will only divide further. Those fighting for a separate Telangana state want a Telangana students' examination answer sheet to be checked only by a Telangana teacher.

The argument is that a teacher from the Coastal Andhra or Rayalaseema regions may have biases that could show up in their marking. Professor Kodandaram, convenor of the Telangana Joint Action Committee says: "In the light of sharp social divisions, it may reflect in the evaluation. So it is better that these papers are evaluated locally, within the region."

Over one crore answer papers for Class 10 and Intermediate are assessed by teachers every year in the state. Answer sheets are often sent to schools and colleges in different regions to ensure impartial assessment. And now, this.

The beleaguered state government is grappling with the new demand. Higher Education Minister Sridhar Babu says: "We have to safeguard the integrity of our systems. How that is done, we have to work on it and have to evolve a system."

Telangana leaders have given the Centre time till January 28 to announce a timeframe for the formation of a Telangana state, failing which all public representatives will press for their resignations to be accepted.
