Telangana: Those who believe in democracy shouldn't bypass state assembly, says Sharad Pawar

Mumbai: The YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy was in Mumbai to seek support from political leaders for a united Andhra Pradesh. Mr Reddy met NCP chief Sharad Pawar and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray.

Sharad Pawar said the state's bifurcation should have been announced after taking into account the state legislature's resolution. Jagan Reddy has staunchly protested against the idea of bifurcating Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mr Pawar said, "Those who believe in democracy should not bypass the state legislature."

The statement may not go down well with the Congress which is in an alliance with the NCP both at the Centre and in Maharashtra.

Jagan Reddy also found support from the Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray who said, "Jagan is here to stop the ruin of Andhra Pradesh that the Congress has started. We are against the creation  of Vidarbha as a separate state. We believe such a proposal can be considered only if it has the sanction of the 2/3rd majority in the state. This decision to divide the state has been taken by people sitting in Delhi and this reminds us of the British policy of divide and rule."

"Whenever they have constituted any state, the Assembly resolution was always taken into consideration. The Congress is dividing the state six months before election for votes. We must stop this because if we allow this to happen, any government sitting in Delhi will divide states according to their whims and fancies."Jagan Reddy told reporters after meeting Mr Thackeray.

The Telangana Reorganization Bill is likely to be tabled in Parliament in the winter session. Jagan Reddy has also won the support of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee whose party has 19 MPs in the Parliament. Describing Jagan as her "brother", Ms Banerjee had extended full support to his struggle against the proposed bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh.
