Telugu cinema back to school

Hyderabad: The students want the playground while the school management wants to take it over to build an IIT coaching centre. This is the clash that is at the heart of `Golconda High school' - a Telugu film that is drawing the younger viewers in large numbers to the theatres.

Not only is the film a hit but is also likely to be trendsetter in Telugu cinema. It tackles the importance of playgrounds in schools and of sports in character building.

"It makes the point that unless there is sports and unless we stop pushing our children more towards ranks, there won't be an overall growth in the child. And as the child goes through his B.Techs and MBAs, he is going to fail the test when he deals with real life," said  the producer of the film Mr. Rammohan.

Telugu actor Sumanth plays the role of the inspirational cricket coach, much like Shahrukh Khan's character in the Bollywood film `Chak de India'.

Sumanth says people have identified with the film also because of the state of the schools in the cities where playground space is more the exception than the rule.

"I was shooting in so many schools and I realised that there is nothing in these schools. It seems to be a like a set of apartments with benches and classrooms and nothing else. It is almost institutionalised. It is almost like a jail. There is no relief," the actor said.

The success of `Golconda High School', filmmakers say will hopefully spawn more sensible cinema in the Telugu industry which otherwise thrives on formula mass entertainers.
