Terror alert in Delhi: Thousands of extra cops on patrol

New Delhi: With the Capital on alert, on Saturday authorities braced for an attack at top markets, after intelligence reports as well as a warning from the US.

Eight to ten thousand policemen were out on the streets of Delhi to ensure nothing goes wrong. From public announcements to CCTVs and sniffer dogs, it wasn't just another Sunday for the city.

Some shopkeepers say there are fewer visitors than usual. Both Sarojini Nagar and Greater Kailash have seen terror strikes before.

Traders who have been told to be extra vigilant, say business is being affected.

"The association has deployed private security people. The number of tourists has reduced since yesterday," said Ashok Randhawa, Traders association, Sarojini Nagar.

The man in charge of Delhi's law and order - Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna has appealed for cooperation.

"Citizens should be on alert all the time. It should become a part of their sixth sense," Khanna said.

"The market is open from so many sides, only one side is guarded by the police. So anyone can come from other sides," said a shopkeeper in Sarojini Nagar market.

Even though the police presence has increased, there is only one metal detector in Sarojini Nagar market, which leaves other points vulnerable. Experts though say, ground security is just a precaution, the real work happens at the intelligence level.
