The family behind BJP's PM-in-waiting

Ahmedabad:

In Ahmedabad , flanked by his family, the BJP's man of the moment cast his vote.

It marked the end of what has been a very personal campaign in Gandhinagar.

The past 3 days were spent in a intense series of road shows, under the protective gaze of his family. Even before he could arrive here, his wife and son have been going door to door, a familiar practice, in every Lok Sabha election.

"I don't say anything; I just go door to door," said Mrs Advani.

Their temporary home in Gandhinagar, seemed less an election hub, and more a time for family re-unions.

The ritual of the family campaign is familiar from earlier elections; but this is a tougher election, not just because of the heat. Advani's bid for Prime Minister has been complicated by the rising ambitions of his junior colleague from Gujarat. But in his daughter's words, Mr Advani is not a power - seeker.

NDTV: But for him personally will it be a huge disappointment if it doesn't happen this time?

Pratibha Advani: I don't think so. As I said, I don't think so. Yes he has always wanted BJP to come to power and that's what he has worked for but for his own self I don't think he is looking at a Prime Ministership or anything.  In fact if there is one thing he likes it's ambition which is not there in most politicians because they are looking for posts. Even the younger generation. I think they are coming to politics because they know they are going to become something. Dada has never had that and he is never going to be disappointed if he doesn't become.

A potential Advani political dynasty seems in the offing. Not Pratibha, though she may be the obvious choice.

"I am happy to get a ringside view," she said.

But her brother Jayant, less visible, is more willing to play a political role.

NDTV: It may not be an idea that you may be entirely aversed to. In some way you have been exposed to public life in politics.

Jayant Advani: No it's not something I am averse to.  But I wouldn't like to speculate on it now. I would let lie low for now and concentrate on campaigning.
