Yavatma: A farmer at work in his fields in eastern Maharashtra was caught off guard when he heard loud cries from a closed gunny bag. He opened the bag, lying near the Pus River, to find a tiny baby girl inside.
The farmer phoned the local police station for help. The baby was rushed to a hospital for first aid, and then moved to another, where doctors say she is in critical condition. They believe she is two days old.
"We have registered an offence against the missing mother but could not trace her so far," said Pusad Jagdev Akhare, a policeman handling the case.
The local state legislator and other politicians have visited the hospital to request that doctors provide the best possible assistance to the infant.
