The Iconic Hotel in New York That PM Modi Checked Into

PM Narendra Modi meets crowds upon his arrival in New York

New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at New York's Waldorf Astoria hotel to a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora, which lined up to greet him and chanted "Modi, Modi".

PM Modi is staying in one of the 26 presidential suites of the iconic hotel, which has hosted many American presidents.

President Barack Obama opted this time to stay at the New York Palace Hotel, where PM Modi stayed during his earlier visit. President Obama was believed to be wary of spying in the Waldorf, which was bought by a Chinese insurance company last year.

Reports say the living room of PM Modi's suite, which is on the 35th floor, has items used by earlier US presidents, like the rocking chair of John F Kennedy, and also their portraits.

The Waldorf Astoria was chosen because of its banquet facilities.

PM Modi is reportedly staying in suite 35 A, which has a foyer, a living room, a dining room and a kitchen.

The prime minister's team considered other hotels like The Pierre for his stay, but reportedly chose The Waldorf Astoria because of its banquet facilities.

Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif is also staying at the Waldorf.

No bilateral meeting has been scheduled between PM Modi and Nawaz Sharif for now, the Indian foreign ministry has said.

During his five-day visit, PM Modi will attend the United Nations General Assembly session. He will also meet CEOs, travel to the Silicon Valley, and address the Indian community. He is expected to meet President Obama in his second visit in two years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are also staying at the same hotel.  The hotel has hosted many world leaders including Queen Elizabeth.
