Third Front govt unrealistic: Karat

New Delhi:

As the Left differed with the Center's logic, it also emerged from three days of introspection over the outcome of the election results.

From withdrawing support to the UPA, to the idea of a Third Front, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat defended all the decisions, but at the same time, admitted that their attempt to make the new front work at the national level were unrealistic.

"Neither did this alliance have a reach all through the country, nor could we prepare a policy platform on which we could function. The call for the formation of an alternative government was, therefore, unrealistic," Karat said while addressing the mediapersons.

But all is not as calm as it appears. Sources have told NDTV that within the party there has been a lot of questions on what led to the poll debacle.

"I as the general secretary took the responsibility of implementing central committee's decision; to that extent I'm also responsible," Karat said.

But the party has a tough road ahead. Hurt by the factional fights in kerela, its now called for a special politburo on the 4 and 5 july to find a solution..

And of course, the big worry of the most is West Bengal where post-Nandigram and Singur, land acquisition has become a contentious issue.

Soul searching is over and it's time for course correction for the Left. And what's needed is a change in policies, pulling up their cadre and taking people along are CPM's priorities ahead of the assembly polls.
