Srinagar: There is an endless search to retrieve the body of Kashmir's brave heart, Ghulam Mohammad Gooru, the 50-year-old Shikarawala drowned in river Jhelum while saving tourists after their boat capsized on Wednesday evening.
Ghulam Mohammad's family, who are waiting for his body to perform last rites, is praying for divine help as rescuers are unable to retrieve his body despite their best efforts.
"They are searching, they are trying but have not been able retrieve the body so far," said Mohammad Sultan, Gooru's brother.
Locals recall the heroic effort of Ghulam Mohammad. They say after boat capsized three tourists were almost drowned but Guru jumped into the fast-flowing river and rescued them.
"They (tourists) were almost drowned, two women and a boy. After they were rescued we took them to home and gave them juice and water. After 15 minutes a car came and they left," said Zahoor Ahmad, a resident of Fateh Kadal.
Witnesses say there were six tourists including two children in the boat when it capsized at Fateh Kadal.
While Ghulam Mohammad successfully saved the tourists, he was drowned while trying to pull out their luggage.
They say the tourists' luggage may well be the reason why body is stuck somewhere down the river and divers and the police motorboat have not succeeded to fish out the body so far.
"Body is stuck somewhere because of that bag .We have fully searched here," said Javed Ahmad, driver of police motorboat.
Police say they have informed all the police stations along Jehlum river to search for the body of Ghulam Mohammad, who gave his life to save tourists.
